Thousands of homeowners run a mini excavator for the first time every year. Drainage, a utility trench, a few stumps: it’s very doable with a little planning. Here’s what to do before, during, and after.
Before the rental
Define the job. Know what you’re digging, how long and how deep it is, and where the dirt goes. Mark the route with spray paint or flags.
Call NC 811. Contact NC 811 at least three full working days before you dig, and mark private lines (irrigation, septic, power to outbuildings) yourself.
Measure access. Measure gates, side yards, and overhead clearance. This decides the machine size.
Plan your tow. You pick the machine up at a pickup zone with your own truck and trailer. Ask for the machine’s transport weight when you book, and confirm your truck’s towing capacity, your trailer’s rating, working trailer brakes, and enough chains and binders to secure it. Then think about where you’ll unload at home and the path from there to the work area.
Protect the yard. Plywood or ground mats along the travel path prevent ruts on finished lawns.
Watch the weather. Wet clay is slick and heavy. If you have flexibility, book for a dry stretch.
At pickup
Expect a walkthrough covering:
- Loading onto your trailer and tie-down
- Startup and shutdown
- Control pattern (which lever does what)
- Raising and lowering the blade
- Track travel and turning
- Safety features and lockouts
- Fuel and daily checks
Ask questions. That’s what the walkthrough is for.
Running it
- Practice first. Spend 20 – 30 minutes in an open area digging and backfilling a practice hole. Smooth, slow movements beat fast, jerky ones.
- Lower the blade when digging. It stabilizes the machine.
- Dig in front, not off the side. The machine is most stable when digging over the blade or the idler end of the tracks, not to the side.
- Watch your swing. The back of the machine swings too. Keep people, pets, fences, and the house out of that zone.
- Slopes: travel straight up and down, not across, and keep the bucket low.
- Stay clear of marked lines. Hand-dig to expose utilities before working near them.
- Never lift people or work under a raised bucket.
After the rental
- Backfill and tamp trenches in layers so they don’t settle later.
- Knock the worst of the mud off the machine if you can.
- Bring it back to the pickup zone at the scheduled time.
- We’ll do a quick post-rental check and hour reading at the return.
