Skid steer vs. compact track loader

Wheels or tracks? Compare skid steers and compact track loaders for grading, clearing, hardscape, and wet North Carolina clay.

A skid steer and a compact track loader (CTL) are the same basic machine: a small loader with lift arms that runs buckets, forks, grapples, augers, and dozens of other attachments. The difference is what’s underneath. One rides on tires, the other on rubber tracks.

That one difference changes where each machine works best.

The short version

  • Firm ground, pavement, gravel, hardscape: skid steer
  • Soft ground, wet clay, slopes, finished lawns, land clearing: compact track loader

Where tracks win

Wet ground. Tracks spread the machine’s weight over a much larger area. On Carolina clay after a few days of rain, a wheeled skid steer can spin and dig itself in where a track loader keeps working.

Slopes. More contact with the ground means more traction and stability on hills.

Lawns. Lower ground pressure means less rutting. You’ll still leave marks, especially turning in place, but far fewer than with tires.

Grading. Tracks ride smoother over uneven ground, so it’s easier to cut a clean, flat grade.

Clearing. With a grapple or a mulcher, a track loader handles rough, rooty, brushy ground better.

Where wheels win

Hard surfaces. On concrete, asphalt, and compacted gravel, tires are faster and more maneuverable, and they don’t wear like tracks do.

Speed. Wheeled machines move faster across a job site, which matters when you’re shuttling material back and forth all day.

Running cost. Tires are cheaper to maintain than tracks, so wheeled machines often rent for less.

Demo and cleanup. Debris that would chew up rubber tracks is less of a problem on tires.

Job-by-job

Job Better choice
Grading a gravel driveway Track loader

Clearing brush and small trees Track loader
Patio and paver base on firm ground Either
Loading a dump trailer on a paved lot Skid steer
Moving pallets on concrete Skid steer
Demo debris cleanup Skid steer
Working after heavy rain Track loader

Our take for the Triangle

Because so much of the area is clay and so many jobs happen on residential lots, a compact track loader is the safer default for most homeowners and landscapers. If your job is mostly on pavement or hard-packed ground, save some money with a wheeled skid steer.
